Love at First Sight

I was twelve. It was a rainy January morning. A packed and noisy school show of Romeo and Juliet in Pineville, Louisiana, was my first time.

And it was love at first sight.

There was no set, no costumes, no set gender roles; it was Shakespeare in the raw and “with the lights on.” That night, I packed the front row with a bunch of giggling girls from the neighborhood. They had no clue (nor did I) who Antony or Cleopatra were, but the evening ended in tears and awe.

ASC was then the Shenandoah Shakespeare Express and I was their biggest fan. Since then I’ve made many trips to Staunton’s Blackfriars Playhouse and even taken my own English students to school shows. I celebrate this anniversary with you and reflect upon many hours ASC has taken me to a faraway retreat through the stage.

Thanks for 25 amazing years!
